Tasked with making a radio play with very little to no dialogue, I decided to base mine off of an incident and ended up creating a soundscape of a pilot’s final moments before crashing. I felt inspired of this audio clip on Freesound.org, where the song ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ was playing in a big empty room and it sounded very ominous. I then put a normal version of the song in at the beginning and played the warped version at the end once the plane had crashed. This use of Anempathitic sound I felt created an interesting, sinister atmosphere and helped the narrative consistency.
The only dialogue that is in it is some general radio speak, that doesn’t really aid the storytelling. I felt that sounds of the music being turned on and off, so the radio could be heard, helps to encourage an audience to imagine the cockpit in which the scene takes place. To help with clarity, I put in the sounds of clothes ruffling when the pilot is switching the music on and off. For the actual crash, I wanted to create a cacophony of sound to overwhelm the senses, with less focus on how realistic the crash is and more on the tone I wanted to convey.
