Aesthetics & Technologies – 17/10/19 – Space//Architecture (Critical Session)

Today we presented our 6 photos from the walk we did on Tuesday and my pair’s ‘Somewhere Else’ challenge, for which we had Berlin. My photos went down well in the group, receiving praise for how I chose places that effectively conveyed tone and emotion just from architecture and space. We chose a very specific area and timeframe of Berlin, 1950’s East Berlin, one that was still very much effected by the events of the war. Berlin shared a few traits with Plymouth in this way and so the task proved quite doable. I was happy with the photo and thought it was also a dynamic use of space and architecture as well. We decided to put it in black and white to enhance the sense of place which I also think worked effectively. The only personal criticism I would give to the photo is that it would be better to have framed the photo so that the more modern top left corner was cropped out as the building and cars pull you away from the effect. Our technician gave a great example of how you can frame something to crop out certain elements of a shot that would ruin the effect. His example specifically was how he framed a close up in such a way to make it look like an actor had a space helmet on when in reality it was just a fish bowl. Perhaps we should have considered this more when taking the shot and will certainly consider this in the future. Despite this, overall I was happy with how we completed the task.
