Professional Practice & PDP 1 – 31/10/19 – Pre-production

Today in professional practice we looked at pre-production in greater detail than before. We listed the different departments and discussed which roles belonged to which department and how that affects their specific roles and responsibilities. We also talked about the activities that occur at the very beginning of a production, like the script breakdown and how this process informs the rest of pre-production duties that the director and producer must carry out. For example, the script breakdown leads to the director making storyboards and informs the visualisation of the project by production design. The script breakdown also informs the producer with what locations need to be scouted, what team will be required and so how big the budget will be.

We also briefly looked at what the format of a script looks like. After looking at an example we were given a short task of scripting the ‘Chase’ video that we had made in the last session in a professional format, and then read it out while the video played to see if it matched.

I found this flow-chart online about pre-production and I thought it was very concise and clear.
